OMG Moment: Google Buys Motorola!!
Wow! Google has just bought Motorola Mobility for around £7.5 Billion!! This is a complete surprise to everyone I think, but there are a whole host of reasons Google would do this. Firstly, Google has pledged to run Motorola separately from Android, so this shouldn't have a massive effect on other Android manufacturers.
This deal is most likely brought about by Motorola's patent portfolio in my opinion. Recently Google have been struggling to build up any mobile patents to defend itself against what can be described as an onslaught against Android. But it also opens up amazing opportunities for future Motorola android handsets. True Google android phones!
The key quote from Larry Page, CEO of Google, is: "Our acquisition of Motorola will increase competition by strengthening Google’s patent portfolio, which will enable us to better protect Android from anti-competitive threats from Microsoft, Apple and other companies.
The combination of Google and Motorola will not only supercharge Android, but will also enhance competition and offer consumers accelerating innovation, greater choice, and wonderful user experiences. I am confident that these great experiences will create huge value for shareholders."
