One of the better activities they are doing is the Samsung Hope Relay app. Essentially the app tracks when you go running/jogging/cycling, any activity where you move, and for each mile you travel, Samsung will donate £1 to charity on your behalf.

When you first download the app you’ll be asked to pick a photo of your face for Samsung to attach to an animated body (presumably for some funny antics at some time in the future). Once you’ve selected your head, you can select the body and then you’ll be requested to enter your name and address to sign up.

Once within the app you choose to go on a run, the app will hook into your phones GPS to track exactly how far you go. The app also integrates with social networks quite well so you can share your progress and runs. One of the nice features of the app is that you can create teams in order to raise money with other people. Your friends can also “cheer you on” (or abuse you until you run faster, depends on the type of friends you have!) and offer words of encouragement live as you’re on a run!
<div

Upon getting a new phone, the question always raises itself of how all your precious data is going to be transferred over from one device to another and I felt it was the perfect opportunity to have a bit of a clear out and “clear the cobwebs” so to speak. I have already found my perfect File Explorer app but i really wanted to see what was eating up all them MBs. Meet Diskusage

This app is probably one of the best visual implementations of disk management I have seen. The premise is simple, choose your storage area, then the fun begins! Each folder / file is represented by a block or bar. Tap on that block and it zooms into the next level so that you can see the files in the folder etc. It seems a little difficult to explain but really the best advice I can give is to try it. Within seconds you can visually see what folders or files are consuming all your precious space and you can also manage it from the app too, making really easy to delete things to clear up your space in no time.

It also gives you root access, so for those of you that way inclined you can use it to explore your system folders too. All this and the best news is the app is completely FREE! Head on over to Google Play Store and download this little gem of an app right away! See below for a YouTube video showing you how it works and the Play link.
<p

Here at Droid-Den on every Friday, I will give you a review on a couple of Google Play gems that I feel are worthy of a download. Here are this week’s must downloads.

1. KD Collage Pro by KDN Soft [Free] Pro [$1.49]

“Beautiful collage is easy” is definitely KD Soft’s key feature in this well-developed app. In a tech world where Instagram is trending on all handsets, this nifty little collage app can make beautiful pictures into a great collage. You have so many options at your disposal. (I currently am reviewing the Pro version). I had looked at the screens for the free version and noticed that to export into the highest quality which was 1620 x 1080, I had to purchase the pro version. It was only $1.49 so I jumped on it after reading some more reviews.

This is an excellent collage app with so much depth and features. You have numerous layouts for 2-4 photos, 5-9, and multiple photos. You can even just fancy up borders around a single photo. You can also change the layout so that it is Instagram friendly. you can add text, add stamps, and backgrounds to fill in the cracks between pictures. You can even upload your own background. This is a great app with a lot of potential I highly recommend the Pro Version. Not sure about what you are limited in the Free besides output quality, but for me that was enough for me to buy it. Check out this collage i did using the app and my photos from Instagram. Download it!

@droidexaminer . I usually cannot stand the Amazon App Store. One of the reasons was due to its notification of updates and new games. It bothered a lot. Recently an update seemed to fix this with notifications alerts options so I have been a little more ok about using the app store. Every now and them they deliver a great game for Free during its Free App of Day promotion they do daily. Gunman Clive i noticed in the wee hours the others really late. I noticed all the positive reviews so i downloaded it. After the first level I tweeted that every one must download it. This game is fun.

You first notice the graphics which are done as sketched ut drawings. It’s primaraily in orange and yellow but it works for the western vibe it is portraying. Simple buttons shoot , jump, and Left and Right Arrows. Awesome 8 bit soundtrack added in the mix and you have a nice western platformer. You go about each Stage just basically shooting bandits, shooting ducks and pelicans for health, and jumping from roof to roof. There is some skill also. there are falling platforms, bandits that throw bombs, and bandits that hide in windows and floor holes shooting away. There are even level bosses too. You can power up your weapons which quick power up, or even regain health by eating some cake. All in all a very cool game Sad you didn’t pick it up for free? i highly recommend you buy it. $1.99 is cheap compared to a lot of $4.99 games in both App Markets. Great sidescroll platformer Download it!<br

If you have $3.99, the there is no reason why you should not have this game use all of your time in the day. This game is by far my favorite game of all time. I have been playing it for about 2 months on and off since I first purchased it in the Blackberry App World for my Blackberry Playbook. I was wondering if it would reach other platforms seeing that it originated on the PC, for awhile and finally it hits the Google Play Store.

Now first thing I will definitely point out is that all of this game is hand drawn. Yes you have a bottom to top hand drawn dark looking machine like world. It is by far very detail. This game is definitely also a puzzle platformer like game. it is very unique in its own way. The first level after playing got me stuck for a while. So you will definitely need to use all of brain, but that is the fun part. One level had me looking for a battery that was double sized. In my inventory i had 2 single batteries and 1 long adhesive string. It took a while to figure out to combine them all to make 1 double battery. You move the little robot character through each level by touching a portion of the screen. Depending on where you touch he will either interact with what you touched or shake his head no meaning that there is no use. You can stretch him up to be taller and squish him down to be shorter. He places objects you can collect which will help you along your journey inside his mouth. Once they are in there, you can see them on a side bar on the right of the screen. You also have a hint for each room or level you reach and if things get really difficult, you have a mini rocket ship shooting spider-like game that when completed will give you a visual blueprint on how to solve puzzles and or complete tasks.

This is a great game with hours of thinking and lots imagination put into detail. Please download it and support great works like this to continue to be Android bound in the future.<br

Here at Droid-Den on every Friday, I will give you a review on a couple of Google Play gems that I feel are worthy of a download. Here are this week’s must downloads.

This week I asked a few people on Twitter (follow me @droidexaminer) what games they were playing. One of my replies was from a gentleman named @just_reboot . He had recommended this game “Lil’ Kingdom”. Upon the icon pic in the Google play store I was skeptical. It was of a little orange dragon. I thought to myself, here is another sim casual game where you level up a dragon and raise it. Boring. Well I was completely wrong about the game and what it is actually about.

Basically you our in control of a Kingdom. A princess in atop of a castle and it is up to “expand it with underground floors consisting of restaurants, inns, entertainment, and clothing shops. You earn coins and glu coins/credits doing numerous tasks like expanding another floor, moving in a new character, and or just touching a character on the screen. You can level up certain floors and then stock it up to earn money as customers flock to different stores. You must hire and assign your dwellers of the underground floors to different jobs that may suite there need to keep them happy. Every couple of minutes the door will knock on the top floor and a customer or maybe a special character comes and is expected to be taken to the floor of their choosing indicated by a number over their head. Take them to the right floor and you will be rewarded with coins or sometimes glu credits/coins. The game has excellent little graphics and the characters are cute and spiteful at times. My only flaw is the loading it takes between each reenter into the game. Its amazing just swiping up and down floors and just watching these little guy interact. It may just be our own digital ant farm. Download it.<br

It’s currently sitting at number 3 and for a very good reason. This little simple game is clever and at heart very challenging. I have seen in the stores a board game that has the same idea but this app simplifies it as an app. You basically are given a screen with multiply “logos” some range from popular restaurants chains to automobile manufacturers. The idea is to find out which one is which. You click on the logo and just type in the name. (spelling is key btw) If you are correct when you see the logo in the list view, it will have a green highlight underneath. Any apps you get wrong will have a red highlight underneath. It even totals how many tries you have had per each logo. I have tried a lot but still have many to go. This may not be a game you will keep on your phone for long. But a cool one to show to friends or even test your own logo skills. One recommendation wold be to have profiles for different users on one phone. Download it.

<img

This is a little gem i stumbled upon in the market. It is very light at only 188kb total. This app for me anyway was designed to be a crutch for multi posting to Google Plus and Twitter. Currently Google has not released the API necessary to have Google Plus posting, feeds, and other features being integrated in other apps that support more than one social website, for example Tweetcaster and Seesmic which has Facebook integrated into its twitter time lines. Although this app does not have the ability to see timelines, it does the job in terms of posting for all your social apps you have downloaded.

Now you first open up the app and check box each app you would like to Multipost. Second, you type in whatever you want to post in the box. The last and third step is where the bulk of the work from Multipost is done. Each post dialog pox will pop up from each app you checked and you just press send when each opens up.

(Basically it Copies and Pastes your status’ automatically for you. Only thing you need to do is press send on each one. This step may turn away many people but for people who like to post the same stuff on all your social apps, having this may come in handy until Google plus is integrated into another app. But honestly for all your social needs I like the easy functionality of this app. Download it.

This app is pretty stable, from the get go i haven’t had many functionality issues. Typically, you expect a couple unforeseen closes and freezes when a new app comes out, but that doesn’t seem to be the case with Instagram. Everything is pretty simple and laid out for you. Navigation is easy and the different applications pretty clear. Yes, yes, there were some angry users upset about not letting the phone’s menu button control the menu in the app, but you get over it.

The main thing for me here is ease of use. You have your home page where you can see all of the pictures of the people you are following (or followees as I like to call them.) The starred section gives you the opportunity to check out some of the most liked and popular pictures of that moment (seriously, if you refresh it, you will get different pictures!)

Next, the photo button in the middle accesses Instagram’s version of your camera…I usually use my camera first so I can save the picture and move on, so that I can come back to it later. Last time I was on the “Instacamera” I had to filter and edit right there, which isn’t exactly convenient all the time. Then there’s your profile/user area. There you can see and edit your information, main picture and pictures you’ve taken.

Back to the camera, whether you are in the “Instacamera” or sharing via your photo gallery. The bummer with sharing from your photo gallery is if you have your photos set to a bigger picture and higher resolution, you are going to need to crop, and trust me, it is not an easy decision deciding whose face or body to remove. Either way, after you crop and lose some friends you come to the filter section.

By my count, there are 18 filters. Each one brings out some different quality of the picture, shown by the effect of the little picture tree. I am personally a fan of X-Pro most recently. There is a contrast effect too that you can turn on and off on every filter, which gives you a whole new effect to the filter. There’s also a border option which allows each of the effects to have their own preset border. Most recently, Instagram added a tilt effect that blurs areas to add depth and point out certain things or words in a picture. It can be implemented in 2 ways, a circle or a line across. Pinch and spread accordingly for your picture.

Conclusion

All in all, this app is solid. The users seem to like it, and they’re making all great and frequent updates. There are a bunch of different ways to do the same thing, which is great when dealing with a variety of users this wide. For as long as pictures will be taken on people’s phones, Instagram will have a market they are appealing to.<br

News recently broke that Samsung has now overtaken Nokia as the biggest seller of mobile phones on the planet.

Samsung has named its android smartphone range as the Galaxy range, which includes the very top high-end phones all the way down to their entry level phones. The Galaxy Fit ‘fits’ into the latter category. Unashamedly a budget phone, the Galaxy Fit looks to improve upon its predecessor the Galaxy Mini. We’ll let you know if this phone is better suited to taking your money than other budget phones (like the HTC Wildfire S).

<a

I have fairly big hands and this phone easily fits into the palm of my hand. The Fit has a lot of curves as you tend to see in most phones this size. It actually looks quite nice, the front and back of the phone are really well constructed, and although made of plastic, it’s very sturdy and gives it a sense of being more expensive than it actually is.

The front of the phone contains a silver grill housing the earpiece towards the top, and the capacitive menu and back keys either side of the Samsung favoured physical home button. The home button is a sort of brushed plastic (actually, the same type of brushed texture as the new pebble blue Galaxy SIII), the only thing that lets down the front of the phone is the silver rim around the home button, which adds an element of cheapness that could have been avoided. This phone doesn’t have a front facing camera.

The back of the phone contains the 5MP rear camera (no flash unfortunately), the Samsung logo and rear speaker grill towards the bottom. The back casing of the device is made of a textured plastic, it helps to make the phone feel slightly more expensive than it is and also helps to add an extra element of grip. I’ve found removing the back cover slightly awkward, actually fairly difficult! You have to slide the back off, rather than being able to unclip it. The way it slides follows the direction of the textured grooves on the case so they are no help with getting grip, its possible, just not very easy!

The top edge contains the 3.5mm headphone jack and the microUSB port which also contains a hood cover to protect it from dust when not in use. The top left corner also has a lanyard hole, helping us identify the type of people this phone may be aimed towards!

The left hand edge contains the volume rocker and microSD slot. The volume rocker is made of a cheap feeling plastic, but the actual use of it is fine, its easy to find and change the volume.

The right hand edge contains the power button, again made of the same cheapish plastic like the volume rocker, but again being perfectly fine to use.

Display

One of the biggest let downs of this phone is possibly the screen. It’s a decent size at 3.3”, but is really let down by the resolution, which measures in at a measly 240×320. This is exactly the same as the Galaxy Mini, however the slightly larger screen on the Fit means the successor actually has a lower ppi! What this all means is that icons look quite big on the screen, and everything is kind of..blurry.. Nothing appears smoothly when looking at it on this screen.

Samsung didn’t include their normal display options on this phone either, things such as changing the display style are lacking which I can only assume are as a result of the quite low quality screen. Considering the low quality, the viewing angles are quite good. We should remember this phone is more likely to be used by a teen who tweets a lot, than someone who needs the very high end, but even so, it lacks in comparison to those phone it is competing against.

Software/Performance

The Galaxy Fit runs android 2.2.1, a quite out of date version of the android OS. Don’t expect this phone to be updated to anything else either, Samsung just won’t do it. As a lower end phone aimed at a different target audience, this might not be such a big issue, the type of users this phone is aimed towards probably don’t care what version of android they have. Samsung have included a basic version of Touchwiz on the phone, this is pretty much limited to a new keyboard, and modified core system apps such as Contacts and Messaging. It’s such a light touch it’s neither here nor there. I’m sure the reason for the light touch was to ensure the phone wasn’t too overloaded, as the minimal specs might have taken a battering. The Samsung keyboard is a bit fiddly to use on such a small screen, I found myself constantly having to correct myself, thankfully the Fit also comes with Swype keyboard. Using this helped greatly, and if you’re hoping to use this phone primarily as a texting/communication device then Swype should suffice. The autocorrection wasn’t the quickest by any means, but it was accurate.

The phone has a 600MHz CPU and 280MB of RAM pushing everything along. You can feel the lack of power when attempting to do intense things such as playing games (Angry Birds stutters occasionally), or when you try and do a few things at the same time, the lack of RAM just can’t deal with too much.

The capacitive keys I’m happy to say are well implemented, both the menu and back keys are extremely responsive. This is something even the ultra high end phones struggle with, so Samsung have done well on this front.

The sound coming from the phone wasn’t great, I really wouldn’t bother using this to play music through the loudspeaker, but for calls it was fine. It’s what you would expect from this kind of price point.

Camera

I didn’t really expect much from the 5MP rear camera on the Fit, however i was pleasantly surprised! I mean, this won’t compete with the very high end in mobile phone camera we can find on the likes of the Xperia S, One X or Galaxy SIII… But, it’s not actually that bad.

The sample photos I took lacked a bit of colour/contrast, but the detail was much better than expected, especially on close up shots. The detail did lack somewhat when attempting to take more of the scenery in. Moving shots produced adequate performance as well. The lack of flash will be an issue for some people, but for others the good autofocus will make up for it in daylight.
<div

The inclusion of swype will be a great addition for those wishing to use it primarily for texting and communicating. It’ll fall over if you try to do too much at the same time, but that’s pretty much the same across the board for a phone this price.

It’s still early days for Google Drive of course, but we are beginning to see developers take advantage of (the actually quite good) Drive API. One of the most, if not the most popular backup apps for Android, Titanium Backup, has recently upgraded its app to support Google Drive.

As long as this trend keeps going, I’ll have to start thinking again about just which cloud backup solution I go with!

Like many of us (I think?), I’ve been waiting for a way that I can view television programs when I’m out and about. The introduction of the TV Catchup application for ICS has actually made me very happy. The selection of channels is quite immense, in fact I actually get more channels through this service than I do on my standard freeview box at home (pics for that later).

On initial usage (After the adverts, which is fair enough, they have to earn something to run it for free right?!) the picture quality was amazing on my HTC One X.

Obviously picture quality cannot translate directly to a screenshot, but take my word for it, the whole picture flowed excellently with no visible buffering on WiFi (and very minimal buffering on my Vodafone connection on HSDPA). All in all I think it is an excellent little addition to the website I currently use anyway.

In summary I did not find anything wrong with the Beta, everything worked as it should and I tried all of the channels to see if I could break it.. I couldn’t! If you have tried the Beta on other ICS phones/tablets please let us at Droid Den know your thoughts!

A selection of the available channels are below!

<a

I decided this week after seeing a few reviews and checking out the YouTube video to give it a shot…(no pun intended). I will have to say that this is by far a very addictive game when you have a lot of time to spare. This game took me back to the years when I was in my own backyard, trying to make difficult and impossible basket shots. I am sure you all have seen the many YouTube videos also of trick shots that although may be questionable, some are very much real and take a lot of skill to perfect.

So basically you have three shot to make a perfect basketball shot in the net as well as rack up as many points as possible. The highest score in each level gives you 3 stars. You aim and power how far your shot is by touching the touch screen. Now you cannot just aim to get the ball in the net. That basically gave me the lowest amount of points. The idea is “trick shots”. How about bouncing the ball off a chimney, than on the roof, then off a gutter, then bouncing right back up to land right in the basket. I am not even exaggerating or touching the surface of crazy shots. One level had balloons flying by and as I popped them, my score was multiplying. It is a fun game with ton of action appeal. Download it!….But pay for it. It’s worth it.<br

Oh yes it is. I was wondering when i would ever see a jOusting like game that had awesome graphics and gameplay. Shake Spears is this game I was longing for. You have 20 cities with jousting opponents, in 4 worlds, and with 4 bosses. The game has excellent graphics and catchy music. You can upgrade your armour and shields and well as your “lance” (that stick you charge with) with gems you collect for won battles.

Gameplay is rather simple. The battle starts and both the player and opponent charge automatically towards one another. You must then slide up and down using both sides of the screen to control your characters actions. The left side is for your shield and the second is for your Lance. The action slows down and zooms in as you both reach the point of impact. Now the only way to knock your opponent off the horse is to deplete his life bar. You must aim for areas that are not shielded. If no player or opponent has been knocked down the charge starts again. (make sure you remember that you always restart on the left side. It restarts fast and that is a flaw in my opinion but minor). All in all it is a fun game with a lot of customization and also fun. Download it.<br

The Avengers is out today in theatres in the USA. I am a big Marvel fan. I have watched and enjoyed every single Marvel movie (except the first Hulk movie) and tonight along with millions I am sure will watch it as well. Now in the market this interactive comic book is no joke. It has so much appeal and its saddens me that others were not released for each Avenger. I would have loved to see a prequel like comic for Steve Rogers aka Captain America. Even Bruce Banner in hiding trying to cope with his Hulk alter ego. I mean Tony Stark (Iron Man) has two movies under his belt or ummm Armour.

This is app is a comic like pop-up book for grown ups. You can interact with different aspects of the comic books graphic on the screen. Wanna put on Tony’s armour for him? You can. Wanna his suit and see a charge blast you will. It’s a comic book that is digital with extras. You can even find Avenger Tokens to unlock pencil sketch art.

ANyways this is cool treat to give a read before you go and see the movie . I don’t want to give away anything but it plays a small role in the movie. So give it a read. Download it.

<img

To get the bestest, most brilliant device I could get my hands on. Maybe the latest Android tablet, one of the next generation Smartphones. Then along came Archos with a device I would never have dreamed of reviewing in a millennia. With us being about everything Android related, we mean EVERYTHING! So I agreed to the device being sent and here it is in all its glory: The Archos Home Connect 35. Am I impressed? Find out by hitting the link!

 Design

Ok, I am not going to lie to you. I purposely won’t (and don’t) look into too much detail on photos of products that I am going to get my hands on, mainly due to the fact that I want my first design impressions to be of the physical product rather than a professionally taken (and sometimes a little manipulated) photo of said product.

When I was told that I was going to get the device sent to me for review my imagination went wild. Ethernet cables plugged in to sockets, a huge device taking up half of the sideboard (which I was already trying to explain to my wife before it arrived!), and huge cables and transformers trailing to plugs. Thankfully absolutely none of them were true!

This is an extremely compact device for the power it produces. A 3.5” resistive touchscreen is the main attraction on the front with a mesh cover at either side covering the speakers. This is a very curvy product with hardly a straight edge on it. Following the curves to the back you will find the connections etc. Micro USB is the charger flavour in the device (which made it remarkably easy for me just to plug my phone charger to get up and running) A Micro SD card slot, Aux connector (3.5mm jack plug) and power/reset buttons.

This in my opinion is a well-crafted device designed well to fit in to a home without standing out too much and small enough to be overlooked and not be an eye sore. The only criticism I have is the review device I received had the mesh grills on the speakers coming off. However I am absolutely certain that this will be due to the amount of travelling / over eager reviewers this little thing has done and seen and I am confident this wouldn’t be a problem for you should you purchase (I “Googled” the issue and not a single post)

OS (Android)

This Android-powered device is running Froyo version 2.2.1; a dated version of Android compared to today’s standards but nevertheless a more than suitable version of Android for this device. It is a fully working version of Android too. Not dumbed down or restricted. On initial playing around it seems that I can do pretty much everything I would expect to be able to do on a Froyo flavoured phone or tablet. Emails, Apps (via Appslib, Archos’ own App Store), YouTube, Videos, MP3s, games everything!

Personally, I wanted to use this device during review as what it is primarily made for a web radio, but the clue is in the devices name, This would be perfect for someone who has internet but doesn’t have a computer and want to very rarely get things like emails in the house. Also, with it being Android powered, it means that it can run apps like Skype. Archos obviously have thought of this little benefit too as they saw fit to install a webcam into the front so you can use it to make those Skype calls to friends and family wherever they are for free. Now I don’t use Skype so I couldn’t test but I am sure it works well enough for people who would want to use it on a device like this.

Speakers

I think these should have some space of their own on the review, mainly due to the fact that they take up approximately 33-40% of the front of the device. Archos have installed High Definition speakers into the product. Now if you use the radio first (which I did) the first thought you have of the speakers is “Meh”, however do not let this be your last thought. Load up an MP3 or video (which it plays very well) on the device and have a little listen. The audio quality for the size is absolutely phenomenal! The bass is deep and the audio is crisp and loud. I must say I was very impressed with the sound. The radio side of things (which uses Tune In Radio Pro installed as standard) is good but the audio is not as good due to streaming qualities. In terms of the radio, I have only had a couple of 2-3 second outages whilst streaming for the past 3 hours or so. So I am definitely impressed with that (and my internet connection!)

Screen

The hub of the device is the 3.5” resistive touchscreen front and centre on the device. In all honesty the fact that it is resistive is probably the only real let down on the device. With £40-£50 “dumbphones” now starting to come with capacitive touchscreens it is a shame that one wasn’t put in this device to really polish it off as the finished article. Any time I think of a resistive touchscreen, my mind automatically wanders off to images of punching a Samsung Tocco “Taco” F480, Tocco lite or Nokia 5230 and this screen lives up to those expectations.

Trying to type things into search proved a laborious task to say the least, with the most commonly used button being the backspace key as nearly every letter I pressed was pressed incorrectly. Now I know I have fat fingers but I would expect even the most slender of pinkie digits have a troublesome time. The visual quality of the screen is OK, probably comparable to the Samsung Galaxy Mini and lets be fair here, the device has not been designed as a tapping and viewing all day long device, it has been made predominantly as a web radio, something to listen to, so I wouldn’t be put off this device because of the screen.

Archos Remote

For the lazy amongst us (read: me), Archos have us in mind. A cool little App for your Android phone called Archos Remote is what they came up with. This app connects to your home connect device via the wifi network and enables you to gain almost full control of the device without disturbing the large round indents you are making on your sofa. You can open / close apps, change tracks / stations, do just about anything. This is definitely a nice addition.

<a

Here is a list of the main features of the device.

Internal Battery: This device also packs a battery so you do not have to leave it plugged in all the time (think web radio during the day, alarm clock on bedside table or “nightstand” at bedtime).

Alarm: Obviously this has an Alarm with it being Android, but Archos have integrated it with the Web radio so just like other alarm clocks, you can wake up to your favourite radio station

Photo Frame: Use the device as a photo frame showing off your favourite photos and memorable moments.

CPU: 1 GHz processor with OpenGL support

uPnP Support: Stream music and video from a connected network device

Tech Spec
<table

Read why after the Jump!

So, if you have reached this far you are probably thinking “Danny, have you lost your marbles man? It’s beta…. BETA!” the short answer to this is no! I was on the lookout for a replacement file explorer app as I was growing weary of the one that has served me well over the past year or so (sorry ES file explorer :/). It was my friend who told me about this app and after just 15 minutes of use I knew that this was something special.

Firstly, the visuals. It has 2 theme choices at the moment. Light or dark. Personally I prefer the dark option but you get the choice. The way everything is laid out makes the app extremely easy to use even for the non power users. The 5 options at the bottom are all you need and everything is neatly tucked away under their fairly obvious headings.

Its not all just about aesthetics though, underneath the visual delights is probably one of the most feature-rich apps I have ever used. From an extremely cool feature where you turn your device to landscape and it automatically opens up 2 file explorer windows side-by-side and you can literally pick up a file from one side and drag and drop it over to the other side!

The app also provides excellent visuals on your storage usage. Giving you very helpful little pie charts highlighting where your precious storage space is being used and makes it really easy to manage your file system and make sure you are not wasting your space.

This is the full list of features that is highlighted by the developer:

Main features:
1. Two independent panels for browsing
2. Drag and Drop inside and between panels
3. FTP, SFTP and SMB/CIFS clients
4. File sharing via FTP
5. Support for ZIP, TAR.GZ, TAR.BZ2 and RAR archives
6. Creating ZIP and TAR archives
7. Dropbox and Box support
8. Bookmarks
9. Root access
10. Indexed search, also available from the system (that means that you can search for files from the Google Search widget/app)
11. Detailed file and directory information

And here are the features that are still to come:

Planned features:
1. Multi language support
2. Image preview on remote places
3. Ability to set a cloud service as default panel
4. Holo themes

Now obviously there is a disclaimer that, as this is a beta, expect crashes and things not working quite as expected, however the developer is happy for every crash log to be sent to them and, to be honest I havent seen a single glitch yet!

I would definitely recommend giving this app a go. It will eventually become a paid app so give it a try now! I know that I, for one will be paying for this app as soon as it is released and has now bagged the title of my default file explorer on my android devices!

Hit the link and grab the app!
<br

Now a new rumor is floating around the web sent out by an anonymous tipster claiming the new Wii U will be Android powered. This could make for a very interesting device depending on how they play their cards.

Of course there are pros and cons to this rumor. If they handle it correctly and include the right mix of Nintendo software and Android software, this could prove to be the first real usable Android on your TV experience out. This alone would provide developers a complete Android gaming console to develop better, more graphically intense games and apps for. It would have to have access to the Play Store and allow Movie rentals along with the current support for Netflix as well to really be accepted as Android powered. This could also open up the door for Nintendo to produce their own emulator apps for the system and allow for easy access to classics from all their previous platforms. Even if they made their classic games as stand alone apps to purchase through Google Play it would be huge. The whole idea has some seriously cool potential, but how they handle it will make it a hit or just another box connected to TV’s that goes no where.

Lets just hope Nintendo do this right and not screw it up.
<img

Add to this the growing complexities of website designs, in some cases reading can also be distracting. There’s a few services out there that aim to address this issue, with the two big players being Instapaper, and Pocket (formerly Read It Later). Pocket just launched a completely revamped app, and while there’s no official Instapaper Android app, there is Papermill. But which is best? Join me as I discover the answer.

Papermill

First up we have Papermill, an Instapaper client. It supports (almost) all you’d expect from an Instapaper app. You can read distraction free, archive read items and or like them. Unfortunately, that almost is there for a pretty big reason for some — it doesn’t support folders. However the developer is working on this for a future update, so hopefully it’s not too far off. It’s worth mentioning that on top of the cost of the app, you also have to pay for a subscription to Instapaper for API access. This will only set you back $1/month though (although you have to pay for a minimum of 3 months), so it’s not exactly breaking the bank.

The first thing you’ll notice when you open Papermill is quite a striking UI. It’s an ICS-like UI, with the designers own spin on it to give it a unique feel. I find the icons tab bar to be a bit too dark for the background. The action bar icons in the reading view also suffer from being a little too dark. Overall though, it’s clean and easy to use.

Onto the big part, reading. For the most part, Papermill delivers. Article text is easy to read, with a dark mode, which presents white text on a black background, for those so inclined. Also hidden under the action bar overflow button (even if you have a menu button, which I kind of like) is the ability to share, adjust the text size, view the original webpage, or delete the item from your Instapaper account. Two separate icons allow you to archive and like the text from there. Where I feel it fails slightly, is when it comes to viewing pages that Instapaper’s clean reading view doesn’t support. Take for example a YouTube video. I would expect such a link to just bring me to YouTube, but instead it brings up a “Sorry, this page is not available in Instapaper.” message, that isn’t mobile optimised. Were it mobile optimised, I’d give it a pass, but unfortunately it’s not (Edit: The developer has told me on Twitter that they plan on addressing this issue). For offline reading, Papermill can do a daily check of your Instapaper account and download new articles in the background. It would be nice if this were configurable to a shorter timespan, but if you have an internet connection at all times anyway, it’s no big deal.

Papermill is a solid Instapaper client, and if you’re currently an Instapaper user, it’s a good investment. You’ll also get that warm fuzzy feeling of supporting a developer and designer who put their time into this app, and Instapaper for creating and maintaining a top-notch service.

Pocket

Pocket was a surprising update and re-branding of the previously named Read It Later service. They completely revamped both their iOS and Android apps, which in my opinion was much-needed on Android. The new design brings it up to scratch with some Holo Light ICS styling. They also introduced a new price — free. As the Official Pocket app, as you’d expect, it supports everything you can do in the web interface, including tags, which 1-ups Papermill. It also includes a tablet optimised UI, which unfortunately I couldn’t test as I don’t own an Android tablet.

The new lighter UI is leaps and bounds better than the old one. It’s cleaner and less in your face, meaning you can focus more on the content. I can’t really fault the UI, they’ve done a great job adhering to the ICS design guidelines.

<a

It allows you to focus more on the article, and even allows you to hide the toolbar while reading simply by tapping. I would like if the action bar at the top also appeared on top. Most of the controls you want are on the bottom toolbar anyway, but still, it would be nice to me. Pocket has a few more viewing options alongside resizing of text and a dark mode. It also allows for changing the brightness of your screen from the app, gives the choice of a serif and sans-serif font, and lets you choose whether you want left aligned, or justified text. Pocket also allows for offline storage of articles, but with more configurable options, including push, which is a very nice addition. Pocket also not only handles incompatible webpages properly by loading the webpage itself for the likes of YouTube videos, but it even allows you to view based on whether the link is an article, video or image.

Pocket gives an experience you’d expect from an official app. I’d be slightly concerned about how they plan on making money, since there’s no ads, and they have bandwidth to pay for and employees to pay, but given it has an open API, you could fairly easily migrate to another service if things went sour.

Verdict

Both Papermill and Pocket are great apps, but if you’re currently trying to decide on what service to use, it’s hard to say no to Pocket. It has more advanced features while also having a cleaner UI. If you’re already an Instapaper user though and have no plans to move, I have no qualms about recommending Papermill. The developer has done a great job of bringing Instapaper to Android, and once folder support is implemented, it will be fully featured too.
<img

Here at Droid-Den on every Friday, I will give you a review on a couple of Google Play gems that I feel are worthy of a download. Here are this week’s must downloads.

<span

If not you may have been living under a rock. Words with Friends, Zynga Poker, Hanging with Friends, or maybe the newly released Scrabble with Friends ring a bell? Well they now have a fun crazy addictive action/ defense game at our disposal. Take the action of Plants with Zombies, amplify the pace, amplify the graphics, add some crazy power ups, and you have a fun game that is easy to pick up and get challenging as you progress. There is a Campaign Mode that has players trying survive for over 31 days against the mounting zombie threats. Then you have another 30 nights that challenge again. There is about 30 power ups that help you destroy zombies. Some of them are falling rocks, rockets that attach to zombies that send them sky-high (My Fav) , and also a revolver that auto shoots out of your house.

The gameplay is basic you use the touch screen to pick up and toss zombies any which way you like. They become like “rag dolls” upon touch and you must throw them away, slam them, or send them sky-high. (At first it may seem tedious but once you have hordes of zombies coming at you the action gets intense) This game also changes its pace at time. For example there was one Huge Zombie that I came across that could only by killed with power ups due to him being too heavy for my touch action to handle. It’s a great game and well worth the money.

I love card games. I know everybody favorite card is and always will be “UNO”. But this game is a true hidden gem that many people overlook on a daily basis. You take the card game “Rummy” and then implement “sets or rounds and you have Phase 10. You basically start at Phase 1 out of the 10 phases. Some Phases require you to have a certain “set” of cards to put face down. You goal is to go through all 10 sets the fastest before your opponents. You have cards of 4 colors Green,Blue, Red, and Yellow. The cards have numbers 1-12. You also have wild cards which can take the place of any card of any color. Then you have the skip card which speaks for itself. One example of a “Set” is the first Set which basically expects players to have “2 sets of 3″ (Three cards of the same number ex 3,3,3 and 6,6,6). Some other notables “sets are “1 run of 4 and 1 set of 3″ (Any four cards in numerical order ex 2,3,4,5 and again a set of 3 (4,4,4) achieve the first “Set”.

The game starts with all players trying achieve the first Set. Every player has 10 cards and they start their turn by picking up a card from the extra pile like UNO. After the first turn the player has the choice to start his or her turn by picking up from either the discard pile or the extra pile to complete a Set. When they have the “Set” they must place it face up and their next notion is to get rid of their remaining cards. How do i get rid of these cards if I pick up at every turn? Well if another player has Sets face up they have achieved, you can add to those by “hitting” or adding onto their sets. You can only “hit” after you have a Set of your own. If you have a Set complete and you have discarded all you cards you have finished the Set. All cards are collected and dealt again. But now you are working on Set 2. Any other players that did not complete a Set are stuck on that Set until they have completed it.

The idea is to get all the way and complete Phase 10. I recommend to get the true experience of Phase 10 either pay .99 cents for the full version which allows you to play all 10 Sets. The Free version only allows you to play one Set. Download it and have fun!
This app is pretty much a compliment to the always addictive and awesome Photo Sharing Social Network aka Instagram. Iphone users have used a similar app called “Tweegram” and now us Android users can have our fun also. Now I do not know about how robust “Tweegram” is, but Textgram seems to get the job down. Basically you make picture files that contain words that you can post to Instagram as square pictures. The Textgrams are already precut for Instagram sharing. You may want to announce a thank you for many likes or just make an announcement to your Instagram followers. This is where the app comes in handy. Now you can save these pictures and not always use them just for Instagram, but the app was intended for it. I havent played with it that much but you can change the font, change the layout, underline or strikethrough text, and also add emoticons. It’s a great compliment and one would Think Instagram may invent a function similar to this for all their app in the future. In the mean time, download Textgram and give it a spin.

I got my update the other day and didn’t look at it for a few days, partly from apathy (I mean what else are they going to do it the app?) and partly from the real life messing with my app reviewing, but I finally opened it and here it is. Firstly, the update seems to bring the Android and iPhone app closer together. Not sure if the similarities are just laziness on FB’s part or Apple’s new CEO not sharing the same hatred for Android as his predecessor once did, but they are very alike. Could this be a signal of future shared apps? What’s next, world peace? But I’m getting ahead of myself.

Regardless, the new update offers some icons that are basically shortcuts for the camera and messenger. Some people seem bothered by the addition of the new apps/icons, but it’s just making it easier to get to the feature we want. Now users can access the camera and messages in the Facebook app or if they are closer to the shortcuts, they can go to them from there. I wasn’t totally pleased to find out they put another messenger icon in, as I have already downloaded the Messenger app separately from the Play Store, but it’s easily removed.

The camera icon seems pretty nice. With the recent rave over Instagram, Facebook seems to be pandering to that fad. It loads pretty swiftly and flows nice. After you take the photo, its right into tagging, witty status updates and location, then boom. You’re done. If you’re someone who is always uploading pictures to Facebook, this is for you.

The only bummer seems to be that if you do not like these new features and decide to uninstall one, you are uninstalling Facebook as a whole. If you are familiar with Facebook in any way and have accepted them as they are, then you are already used to these sorts of rules. As a whole, I like the changes, it seems to keep getting easier for users. Some people don’t and that’s cool too. Just allows them to have more to talk about too. What it comes down to is that everyone uses Facebook; some people complain while doing it, but I prefer to just embrace and enjoy the technology as it comes.
<br

If you are into mobile phones, hell, if you are into technology you’ll have noticed the internet swirling with rumours about this phone. I say this phone because we don’t even know what it will be called yet!

We don’t have that long to go to find out either, in exactly one week today on Thursday 3rd May in London, Samsung will unveil their new phone to the world. I’m sure you’re all excited to see what the most success and popular android phone manufacturer will be bringing, and remember we’ll be there bringing you information directly from the event (the best place to follow the event is through twitter here btw).

<a

As we have been given official confirmation that the new quad-core exynos CPU is the same size as the dual-core version used in the Galaxy SII, this seems quite possible.

So what are your thoughts about the rumours and “leaked” pictures of the device so far? I’m personally very excited to see just what Samsung will bring, especially with regards to the design of the device. A lot of people complained about the plastic used to manufacture the Galaxy SII (not me, I quite liked it..) and it will be interesting to see if Samsung took this on board with the SIII, there have been numerous rumours of the phone being made of ceramic material on the back of this.

I hope you guys will join me on Thursday, I’ll be sending out the link to the live stream as and when it is available so you can watch the action unfold yourself as well. In the meantime Samsung have also released an Unpacked app for android that will give you information such as the press release when it becomes available.
<br

As there are lots of photo gallery applications out there already, what makes Scalado stand out from the rest? Hit the jump to find out!

Firstly a bit of background information on Scalado:

“Scalado is a world leading provider of mobile imaging technologies, with a long history of developing breakthrough innovative imaging products and platform-independent imaging solutions. Scalado has more than 50 patent and patent pending technologies and is currently being used by the world’s leading global telecom and platform companies. Scalado technologies are in over 1 billion mobile devices, a figure growing with over 500 million each year. Scalado was established in 2000 in Sweden, and has offices in Sweden (HQ), USA, Korea, China, Taiwan & Singapore.”

So what does set Scalado Album apart from the competition? Well the main thing is speed. The app is absolutely lightning fast after the initial caching of the photos and when I say fast I mean FAST! Scrolling through the thumbnails is seamless as is flicking in-between full size photos, it handles both really well.

The app also gives you extra viewing options than standard album apps give, with quick and easy access to Camera Roll, photos taken nearby, the month the photo was taken, places and the separate folders that your photos are in.

Another great feature of the app is the little globe icon in the top left which takes you to a great little feature which, for you Mac users out there is very iPhoto-esque. It basically drops pins into the map at the locations where your photos have been taken as long as they have location data. Simply tapping on the pin opens up the thumbnails specific to that location.

The speed at which it pans and zooms is also pretty excellent too. It definitely feels a lot smoother. A quick double tap shoots you into the detail almost instantly and panning around the photo is silky smooth. It also has animated thumbnails for videos which is a cute little feature too!

However there are a few things that the app feels to be missing for example, the ability to hide certain folders / photos does not seem to be present and it doesn’t take any notice to .nomedia files in the folder to exclude them from the library. It would also be great to be able to link online photo libraries like picasa or dropbox.

I have also noticed (but this may be me using CM9 on my SGS2) that when going into the camera via the app, if the phone is in portrait then the camera app would crash more often than not. Also, on occassion when trying to select photos to upload etc., instead of selecting the photo it would send the photos scrolling again.

Overall this is a good app with a lot of positives and is definitely a serious contender to replacing my gallery on my phone.

The app costs 65p ($0.99) which is great value. See below for the Google Play link, press release and video.

The Scalado Album is designed for making your everyday photo experience great. We want to bring you the best user experience possible but still keep the design simplistic and responsive. It is built from ground up using the Scalado Imaging Platform to enable maximum performance on Android. The album allows you to quickly find the photos you are looking for and you can smoothly zoom into every single detail in full resolution. Experience your photo memories and enjoy.<br

The once legendary game on PC and PS2 Max Payne is heading onto Android and is due out TOMORROW!

This classic game was the joy of many an hour of my time when the original came out and if the success of Grand Theft Auto III is anything to go by then Max Payne is sure to be a hit on our favourite mobile OS!

This is being released by Rockstar Games, which look like they are wanting to capitalise on the successes of previous releases of older games onto Android. This seems to be the latest phase in games publishers tactics at the moment and it is proving very successful in the most part.

Features

The home screen gives you direct access to your favorites, trends, lists, searching and column editing. It’s quite nice having a home screen where you can hop to different areas that aren’t the timeline and mentions, especially if you have some lists and favorites that you visit frequently.

Getting from screen to screen (timeline to mentions to direct messages) is a simple slide of the finger. No clicking to get to what you want to see, just a slide. If you felt comfortable with the touching where you want to go, you still can as well.

It’s all about options with Plume. Refreshing you feeds can be done by touching the refresh button or pulling down on the screen. Also, you can scroll around as you please or just touch the name of where you want to go. Touching the name again will bring you to the top of that screen. I liked that feature a lot, I didn’t use the app overnight and instead of scrolling for a couple of minutes I could just hop up to the top with a touch.

There is also a built-in browser, making loading pictures and links super fast and easy. Just by holding down on the post will get you there. You can do a number of things also in the settings area, change the font size, hide people’s avatars, reverse the order of incoming tweets, alternative times and colorize the tweets (definitely helps distinguish tweets). You can mute users or words too, if you only want to see certain things.

Tweeting itself is pretty great. Three buttons at the top let you throw a hashtag in instead of going to symbols, put an at sign in and the last one puts “http://” in for you when writing a link. Also when that link is written, there is a shrink button to shorten the links. Your pictures you attach can be uploaded with twitpic, plixi, yfrog, posterous, and mobypicture.

Design

The design is pretty intuitive. This is my 4th twitter app (OG android, tweetdeck, twicca) and I feel like I have settled in with it the fastest and most comfortably. Everything fits in really nicely in the screen. Especially on the home screen, there is tons of room, which is unusual for a twitter app. Everything is usually packed in as tight as possible. I have never had a problem with a force close or freezing or anything like that, which is frequent among other apps. Refreshing is fast, loading is quick and uploading is just as fast.

<a

If you want to try out Plume for yourself you can grab it for free on the Android Play Store below:

The app in question is called DoroCame, and is actually one of a familiy of similar apps (others include yurucame, NekoCame and Inucame). The app essentially allows you to create your own Chibi images. Each app features one character in a number of poses and colours, as well as a variety of speech bubbles and accessory items. You can add these either to pictures already in your gallery, or use the in-built camera to take new shots.

<a

Check out my first creation above to see what I mean! You can get extremely creative with this app, so have a go and share your own creations with us at Droid-Den!
<div
