It's things like this that have helped project Samsung to the top of the phone charts. Obviously they spend a hell of a lot of money on marketing, but you also have to get it right too, and they seem to get it right more than they get it wrong (the sports team playing pop music together in the changing room for example!).

Benji Bananas is exactly what the title suggests..Bananas. This game is an exciting physics type game which is both fun and challenging at the same time. The game play is simple and intuitive and once you start you really cannot stop.

The game starts off with a quick tutorial. You basically are swinging from vine to vine collecting bananas through the air and also inside of trees. The timing of your swings depends on how long you press down on the touch screen. You must press down in order to grab onto a vine. Don’t press it in time and you will fall. This game was recommended to me by one of my students. They had this game on their Nexus 10 and I saw how great it was. Nutty Fluffies is a roller coaster game where you spend earned coins on different types of tracks. You collect hearts as you go through each track to unlock more tracks and characters that can ride inside your roller coaster. Each character can give you different power ups during the roller coaster ride. You control the coaster with a simple swipe from left to right. You can control the speed of the coaster by swiping as well. You can lose passengers depending on how your coaster travels throughout the track which results in lower heart gathering. The game has excellent game physics and also graphics. You also have missions to unlock even more coins and unlockables. This is a fun game and should be very entertaining. Download this today!

This weeks downloads are pretty much Platform action games. I was browsing the Play Store and found a few that you may enjoy greatly. The first one is a Parkour inspired action game that has had me playing for days.

Vector is a story line driven game that has levels. In short your running away in each level from a person trying to capture you. If he gets close enough, he will shock  you with his shock stick. You dive, slide and jump long distances through buildings, on top, and over other obstacles. This where this game has its “parkour” elements which are the unlockable moves that you do throughout the level. You simply run past an unlocked move and swipe up to perform it. Some are pretty cool and really add more intense chase scenes to the game-play. Swiping is all you need to do to be a Parkour expert. Collect coins to unlock more moves that are required to complete each stage. It gets very challenging after some stages but very fun indeed. Download this game today!

2. Wipeout   [$1.99]

The Wipeout show that is on ABC is full of fun and laughs as people try to run through obstacles high above water. Of course the big draw to the show, is the”Wipeout” that ensues when people fall miserably into the water. The game surprisingly mirrors that love of the show and makes a great gaming experience on the go. Going through each level you swipe down to duck and hold the left screen to run. You tap the right screen to jump and the rest is up to you to make it through the course. There are many different theme inspired courses that you can unlock by getting  top score time. What is amazing about Wipeout is the physics engine that are involved in the game.With each character the hit detection in spot on. If a bar hits your arm slightly, your body will move slightly. If you touch a bar slightly when you jump over it, you will trip and fall on your face. It’s a great game and very fun to see the “Wipeouts” you have done. Another slight Parkour inspired game, Grudger brings cutesy  graphics with excellent plat former game-play powered by “Unity Engine”. You swipe to control your characters movement like roll, jump, double jump, and tapping. The game has many elements that require  patience and timing and its definitely what made me love it so much so far. If you are looking for a new “twist” on puzzle games then Shift  is right up your alley. The whole idea behind the game is that its considered to be a Rubiks cube in 2D form. The gameplay is just the same as the cube where you must shift the color tiles to be grouped with its other corresponding colors. What’s New

Simple Layout

A wide open, simple layout. The only icons showing when the app opens is a small bar on the bottom, giving you the option to add a new tweet, go to your profile, or open up the settings, which is just another slim bar up the right side.

Sliding Screens

Swiping across to see your mentions and direct messages is quick and easy. You also can see where you are by sleek-looking blue bar on top of the app.

Multi-Finger Scrolling

On the timeline you can pull to refresh, bringing up an obvious swivelling in “Refresh”, but what is very fun here is if you find yourself just too many tweets away from the top, a two-finger scroll will bring you to the top of your timeline.

Transitions and Aesthetics

This is a huge draw for Carbon. When you pull to refresh, your whole timeline pulls with your finger in a very Star Wars-y way. Touching your profile image brings up your profile info from the bottom up (and also back down). Even the new tweet button drags itself up to the front in such a way that is just different from any other app we’ve seen yet. Going into a twitter conversation and scrolling down to see the previous comments makes your original tweet skew up to the right in the background. Scrolling back down brings it back to the front. Some pretty imaginative stuff!

Retweeting and Quoting

These are represented as two different entities. As you long press on a tweet, you can now directly quote a tweet instead of having to hit retweet and see the retweeting options. When you quote, it even puts RT in for you! Retweeting is a separate button in itself and does just what is says.

What’s Lacking

Notifications

A more in-depth notification setup. As of now, you can only turn your mentions and direct messages on or off. Editing them is just not here yet. There is only one set time interval for how frequently the app updates.

Icons

The icon in the notification bar could be a lot nicer!

Integrated browser

This is really a must have by now.

Other Features

Timeline
Although the new twitter client comes off very minimalistic and lacking, its simplicity is what makes it so great. The timeline screen gives you plenty of space to view your tweets (what it’s there for!) and the actual tweets themselves are nice and big! The tweets are on a smooth black background which give them a feeling that they’re floating and not confined to individual boxes.

Profile
The profile page is laid out like a pathway to another area as I usually find myself doing. The screen is broken up into an odd proportion that doesn’t make me want to stay on it for very long and just get on my merry way.

Conclusion

Carbon is a whole new way of thinking about a Twitter app, bringing looks and transitions into the same amount of importance as the information. One of the greatest things about this release is that are seeing some branching out in the way these clients are being developed. Although there are some features that need to be brought and implemented, and being in heated competition with other new…”birdish” Twitter apps, Carbon does have some work to do.  Yes, we did wait way too long, and the line of communication was deceiving at times, but this new Twitter app brings it and best of all….its FREE!

1. HomeFlip   [FREE]

Browsing around the PlayStore,  came across this really simple and intuitive app that really made multitasking a breeze. Basically Homeflip keeps track of your recent apps that you are using. Once you press your home button a series of side tabs fly across the screen. You can then press one to switch to your most recent apps. Although many phones now have a dedicated “recents” button, I found Homeflip to be faster at switching between apps. Pressing the home button once more will take you to your dedicated launcher to fall back on. You can also have favorites that can also be on display. There are  themes to compliment as well as fonts. Developers can even take part and submit themes by using the online template at http://homeflipbyleanandmean.blogspot.com/ . This is a great compliment to any phone and I’m sure you will enjoy it. It’s a very challenging game because certain objects are color coded based on the image. Each completion of a stage merits you a puzzle piece. In the pipelines this week has been a data sync manager in its beta stages that I gave a download. I didn’t like how it was implemented so I went in Google Play and thought that there had to be some app that did the same or similar. I wanted a Titanium BackUp type app that could sync between devices. I want to unlock all levels of Angry Birds Space on my HTC Droid DNA, then be able to pick up my Nexus 7 and start where I left off. Data Sync was the answer to my prayers and brought a lot more.

(YOU MUST BE ON A ROOTED DEVICE FOR THIS APP TO WORK)

Data Sync enables you to back up your data for every single one of your apps. Once you Que what you want to backup, it can be transferred to your SD card, Box account, Dropbox account, or even another device with DataSync on the same local Wireless network. It worked seamlessly for me and I loved how fast and efficient it was. The DataSync + can do a bevy of others things like set up auto sync schedules and even sync once you close a game. One feature although in its  beta stage is that it can sync also through NFC…very cool. This is a great Back up and I will be definitely using this in the future. download this today!

3. Lep’s World 2 [FREE]

Super Mario Bros clones are aplenty in the Play Store. Lep’s World definitely takes the crown as the best one out. Lep’s World 1 and Lep’s World 2 are both fun and very entertaining. Platform done right and there is plenty to love about this. The sprite happy graphics are bright and are vibrant and not too overdone. The mechanics are very simple with left right arrows keys to move Lep and a dedicated jump button. There is also an acorn button to throw acorns at enemies as well. Though Lep’s world 2 may look similar to its original but the music is different and it also adds the element of swimming stages. Download this game today and hopefully it brings you back to the Super Mario days as it did I.

Now there is a reason for it, a justification you could say for this torrent purchasing of mobile phones. To explain or maybe justify my actions I will define what I use my android device for. I am a freelance IT Solutions Architect (I design computer systems basically) I blog and write. Being self-employed I have adopted a two phone policy. One for work stuff and the other as my personal phone. This works great as I can turn my business device off at night but still be contactable for friends and family on my other phone.

My personal device I will say only gets upgraded once a year and is and has always been an iPhone. I’ve tried using the iPhone for work and the Apple ecosystem just doesn’t work for me that well. For social networking, music, calls and text its fine anything above that and no it fails but as my personal phone it does the job. My business phone has always been Android based, there has been the odd Win7/8 in there along the way but for me Android fits with what I need it for. So if I like Android so much the question is ‘Why do I not settle with one device?’

Before writing this article I thought long and hard about this question and made a list of all the devices I’ve purchased in the last 12 months and my reasons for the short ownership. I wont list every device but give a few examples:

SGS 3 – Touchwiz for me is a terrible layer over Android, always has been since the original Galaxy and it really doesn’t get any better. The device itself is great (bit plastic looking) but I don’t buy a £500 device to then install a custom launcher or ROM over the top.

Motorola Razr I – Almost a vanilla Android OS on this device and the processor is snappy enough but even though the device is a 4.3″ it felt tiny compared to other devices I’ve been using. Battery life was truly amazing.

Galaxy Note 2 – Marmite phone really. Great phone if you ignore Touchwiz but the size was a little much for me. I like to have two devices not one that acts as a both. Shame as I wanted this to be the keeper as the screen estate was fantastic.

Sony Xperia – Terrible to hold and to use and shocking battery life. Bond may love this phone but for me it was a no.

What I noticed when making this list was that two things stuck out, the screen size and how the device felt in my hand when being used (I remember when I had my HTC Incredible S ok it was a small screen but to use the device felt great and in fact was in my possession the longest of all the phones looking back). Battery life is of course important but it is for all of us regardless of what type of user we are but carrying a charger around isn’t the end of the world and with the amount of time I spend using my phone there isn’t a device out there that will last a full day.

Every handset I own gets configured the same, with the same shortcuts, widgets, keyboards, notifications etc so putting launchers aside it really is down to form factor and feel ability.This may sound odd to some reading this article but when you spend as much time using a device as I do for email, lync, webex, texts and calls during a day it becomes very important.

I am sure some reading this will comment about custom ROMs to remove Touchwiz or Sense (which I don’t mind as much) but because I use the device for business I don’t want to be running custom ROMs as I need my phone to operated correctly all the time and let’s be honest while there are some great ROMs out there they aren’t always a good idea to run on your daily driver.

So over the Christmas break I took a look at a number of devices and nothing was really working for me. Sitting at my desk I opened my file draw where the Nexus 7 is always stored and notice a phone in there that I don’t actually remember putting there in the first place. I popped my SIM in configured the default ‘Me’ setup and have been using it ever since and it is working a treat for me and I don’t see me replacing any time soon. What is this device you ask?…..

Well its the Samsung Galaxy Nexus! Not a new device and lower spec than the devices I have been using recently but it just works for me and that’s what’s important I need a device I feel comfortable with and as I am only using this as my business phone it doesn’t need to be Quad Core as no game playing takes place. I do actually think I have found the device I will keep for a while now. Of course I just hope Googles next Nexus phone hits the spot as the Nexus 4 left me disappointed.

 Things I like

- It replaces the battery cover in order to provider a slimmer fit.  This means that the case barely adds any thickness to the device, which is great when you have a phone as big as the Note2!

- It is available in many, many different colours, this means your phone doesn’t have to appear to be one of the limited colours that the phone is supplied in, it makes it somewhat unique.  I own the blue (pictured above), I originally wanted orange but it seemed Samsung had trouble meeting demand for certain colours.

- Good Quality – the cover feels better than the one for the S III, I can’t explain why, it just does.  It has a nice soft interior and a textured exterior.

- Looks good

 Things I dislike

- Exterior can mark quite easily, but is usually easy to clean

- Covers the notification LED, but not as badly as the S III – What I mean by this is you can still just about see the LED flashing on the speaker grill so it is not totally blocked.

- Not a smart cover – although strictly speaking this is a problem with the device not the case, I think Samsung missed a trick here, they knew before they designed this phone it would have a flip cover so why not add in the Smart Cover type technology as seen in devices like the Nexus 7 i.e. when the cover is closed the phone sleeps and when the cover is open the phone wakes up.  It may have been that Samsung are keen to avoid areas that might open up litigation with a certain fruity company, but either way I am disappointed it is not there.

Conclusion

You must remember that a flip cover is not always going to be every bodies cup of tea but I like it, especially when one is made as nicely as Samsung make these.  They (in my opinion) are well worth the price to offer that stylish and slim protection for your screen plus gives a chance to change the colour of your phone.

The type of case you choose when the phone is this big is something to give serious thought too.

I will go over a few different type of cases below in a short summary of each type:

Pouches/Socks

This is something that a lot of blackberry owners are used to, its a solid case that your phone slips inside, you cannot use the phone whilst it is in this sort of case but it offers a great deal of protection.

Samsung are offering their own versions in lots of colours (like the Flip Case, see below) or you can get lots of different styles and materials in unofficial cases.

Flip Cases

You get a choice here, official or not, if you choose official its similar to the Note 1 cases, or the s3 flip cases (yes it still has the issue where it covers the LED) but you get plenty of choice in the colours department, personally I am waiting on the Orange cover to come into stock, my s3 had a white one to match the phone, this time I want to brighten things up.

If you choose an unofficial (or third party) case you can get the same style of flip but in differing materials, some with button locks etc or you can get some that flip long ways

The official cases are designed to add little bulk by replacing the stock battery door, but as a result doesn’t offer any protection to the battery door, only the screen.

Pop Cases

Pop cases come in lots of different forms, and for lots of differing prices but basically they protect the back and sides of the phone leaving the screen uncovered, the phone “pops” into the case.  I have had at least one form of a “pop” case for my Galaxy S II and Galaxy S III, they are quick to use and give comfort in that you know the device can take slightly more battering than usual.

Stand Cases

These are pretty useful for a phone of this size, they are often ‘pop’ type cases (see above) but have a pull out stand at the back to quickly turn it into a desk stand.

The only downside with these is they tend to be fairly bulky.

Conclusion

You have to consider that the Galaxy Note 2 has an s-pen, do you use this often? Does your case have easy access to the s-pen?

In conclusion I think you need to give some serious thought to why you want a case, what you want it to do, and then look at all your options to find what will suit you best, personally I look for screen protection with a slim profile so the official flip case suits me perfectly, however it is not without its draw back, you then have to adjust how you hold the device to cope with the ‘flip’.

For users that are not on Jellybean, this app is for you. For users that are already on Jellybean, this app may benefit you as well. Facelock brings the Face unlock software on most Android Devices with a added twist. This app throws in also the added benefit of using your face to Unlock applications as well. Its Facelock for “inside” your phone once its already unlocked. For example. Don’t want any one looking at your gallery? Every time they press the app to open, face unlock will come up and only open with your face. It is a great app and i am sure will be beneficial to many. The free version will lock the protected apps: market, task manager, settings and one app of your choice. Of course the Paid has unlimited App locking as well as a few other features. Give it a Download!

I know many of you guys love Wallpaper apps as much as me. I have about 3 wallpaper applications. This one app is very different and in my opinion has a great selection of colorful Pattern like Wallpapers. I love the menu UI which has a Holo like feel. The wallpapers are all derived from the COlOURlovers Community at www.colourlovers.com. Also has a feature where you can generate a random wallpaper daily set for your phone. You can have a random one set or one picked from your favorites.  This is a great app with a lot of different wallpapers that are not in a lot of wallpaper apps. Download this app today!

7 Little Words is an addictive puzzle game and I cannot put it down. This game I have been playing for at least a week. It is a very challenging puzzle game. If you like anagram games this is definitely up your alley. Each puzzle consists of 7 clues to figure out 7 mystery words. There are 20 letter groups of 3 and 2 letter tiles. You use the tiles to make words and finish the puzzle. There are 30 puzzles for free that you can play. You can pay for additional puzzles at 99 cent a group. They also have it in Spanish as well. 1. Bad Piggies HD  [FREE]

Starting off today with a sure-fire hit. Banking off the success of the Angry Birds Franchise, Rovio had welcomed a sure soon to be hit among mobile gaming fans. Bad Piggies is a game centralized around the Piggies that those Angry Birds are always seeking revenge upon. They are the main stars this time around and they bring a whole type of gameplay as well.

The game is focused mechanics to achieve 3 stars in each levels. You are given a grid with boxes to build with certain materials an apparatus that can help move your piggies around the stage. For example I was given a box and a wheel and combined them to then travel down a hill to reach the goal. It gets a little bit more difficult but it is for sure a great alternative to flinging birds around a screen. The game has about 60 levels and is sure to come with updates later down the road. Download it today!

2. Subway Surfers  [FREE]

Oh man another Temple Run type game…….Rest assured this game is actually quite fun and i prefer it over Temple Run. Off the bat the thing i love the most is the graphics. They are pretty impressive and are very nice on my Nexus 7. The premise of the game is that you are basically doing graffiti on the side of a Subway car and get caught by an officer with his pooch. You then are being chased and this is where the gameplay begins. You can dodge left to right by swiping left to right. Jump by swiping up and roll under by swiping down. The game will have you dodging subway cars left and right and even hoping from the roofs of each one. There are cool power ups like sneakers, hover boards, and also rockets. The game has achievements as well. During your run you collect coins as well to unlock all these power ups. It’s a great game for pick up and go and has great visuals. Download it!

3.Probe the Humans [FREE]

Title says it enough folks. We need to “probe the humans”. No we don’t get to do this in the game. But this is the prelude to that horrible occurrence. We must really capture the humans first. You are an alien in a space ship. You have an ever continuous  retracter beam that is beamed underneath the ship. The game has the ship going from left to right as you progress through the level. Now your job is to direct the retracting beam to pick up whatever you can. Humans , animals,and coins are good. Tanks, barrels of dynamite, and other hazardous things that don’t belong in our ship are bad. The game get really fast and addictive once you keep playing. Since your finger is what is doing the guiding, I suggest this to be a tablet only game. Unless you have a 5 inch screen phone which is ok too. Download this game today!

Bad Piggies Rovio Mobile Ltd. Gratis

Bad Piggies, Rovio’s latest game in the Angry Birds universe is launching on android tomorrow. Personally I’m happy to see something new from the guys at Rovio, however I’m not sure the game ties in much with what we know as Angry Birds other than it starring the dreaded pigs!

I’m excited to see the game arrive tomorrow, but only time will tell if I still feel excited after playing it. Have a look at the gameplay trailer below and let me know what you think!

So today we’ll be looking at the Crystal case and the set of two cases you get with the official Samsung Slim case pack.

Look and Feel

Crystal Case

The crystal case is made of a clear plastic material . I’m not sure what type of plastic exactly, but it looks and feels like a stock kind, nothing too special. As it’s plastic, it’s not terribly durable. If you attempt to bend this like you can with the back cover of the S3, it will most probably shatter. However, that’s not really a use case for this so don’t worry too much, I’m just trying to give you a feel for the material.

Other than that there isn’t much else to say about the look or feel of it. It’s an unassuming case that won’t vie for any attention, instead it keeps the focus on that £500 device it’s designed to protect, which for a case is exactly what you’d be looking for.

Official Slim Case

The official slim case pack actually comes with two cases, not just one as you’d normally be expecting. I didn’t realise this when the pack arrived so it was a pleasant surprise! The two cases are similar in every manner apart from the design on the back. One has straight line grooves running diagonally down the back where the other has rows of small diamond shapes. Both are actually quite nice and add something extra.

Both cases are extremely flexible, you can pretty much scrunch them up and they’ll return to their original form.

Use

Crystal Case

The case slides on easily, and once on covers the back and two sides of the phone. The top and bottom end are around a quarter covered. The sides of the case overlap the side of the phone only slightly, but enough to ensure the case is a good fit and removing any chance of the case falling off in use. There is a half cutout for the 3.5mm headphone jack on the top. This is barely even required really as the case only just about reaches the port. Likewise on the bottom of the phone with regards to the microUSB port. The back of the case contains one cutout for the camera lens, flash and speaker.

There are also cutouts on both sides so that the power button and volume rocker are not covered. This is great as it means you get full access to both of these buttons. Some cases cover these and that can lead to frustration when turning the phone on or changing the volume, not hear though!

As you’d expect the case has a very slim profile too, it does seem to add a bit of extra weight to the phone as well which is strange as the case by itself is very light. I’ll put this down to a trick of the mind. It’s also quite smooth on the back, which could be a negative if you find the caseless SGSIII slippy already. This case is comparable to the phone in slippy-ness terms.

Official Slim Case

The official case fits like a glove. You can immediately tell after applying the case to the phone that both were made by the same manufacturer, I’m not sure they could have gotten the dimensions any more perfect. As the case fits extremely well, the flexibility of it becomes a great advantage. You can flex the case about in any way you wish which means application is as easy as you’re ever likely to find with a phone case.

The case covers the whole back of the phone and all sides. It reaches over ever so slightly as well just to ensure that snug fit.There are the usual cut outs for the 3.5mm headphone jack, the top speaker, power button, volume rocker, microUSB port and bottom mic. I love cases that allow me to use these buttons without restriction, a great positive for this case.

This is one of the thinnest and lightest cases I have ever used on any phone, period. If you have read any of my previous reviews, you’ll know that these are the types of things that really appeal to me in a phone case. Its hard to actually realise the phone has a case on, the only giveaway is the textured grooves on the back of the case. They add style and (what I think might be the real reason for the textured back) grip. If you have ever used the S3, grip may be an issue. Well these two cases go some way to removing that as a disadvantage.

Summary

If you are looking for a thin and low profile case for your phone, you can’t go much wrong with either of these choices. If you’re looking for something to add a lot of protection to your phone, and don’t mind additional bulk then you’ll probably be better off looking elsewhere. Both cases offer great protection from scratches however, and a basic protectino if you do ever drop your phone (as I have done a few times whilst using these cases!).

My personal preference is for the official Samsung slim cases. The slim profile really appeals to me, it allows me to add basic protection from scratches to my phone, whilst allowing the beauty of the phone itself to shine through. The textured back also helps with grip as well as style. The fact that you get two cases in the same package is fantastic as well. The cost of this set of cases is, relatively speaking, quite cheap as a result. It’s also my personal choice (the diagonal grooved version) of case that I use on my SGSIII every day!
